Virgin Media is signing up customers at a record pace for its new 50 MB download speed broadband package. Although not fully implemented, the network within a network offered from Virgin Media is meant to curtail if not directly compete with BTs new Infinity network.
The BT Network which showcases FTTC, fibre to the cabinet technology is referenced at 40 MB download capability. Both of these systems ask the question of whether or not UK consumers need and desire the super fast internet without a phone line.
Recent broadband news has shown that the average speed by which UK consumers are able to connect is just around 4.7 MB. Bear in mind that this number does not reflect peak demand and usage. United Kingdom broadband consumers using an ADSL copper line connection can see ranges of over 4 MB in speed between the different times of day. The reason for this is that unlike the flow of electricity, flow of data over copper or even fiber optic lines is directly shared from a non infinite pool.
The infrastructure of older copper line connections and even new broadband without phone line capability is as yet unable to keep up with constantly evolving microprocessor improvement. What this means is that our computer’s are very often capable of handling the information contained in a download faster than the pipeline providing that information can send it. Fortunately both of the new United Kingdom fiber optic networks are being designed so as to eventually meet the demand.
