Upcoming Options For Broadband Without Phone Line Usage

June 17th, 2010

broadbandVirgin Media is signing up customers at a record pace for its new 50 MB download speed broadband package. Although not fully implemented, the network within a network offered from Virgin Media is meant to curtail if not directly compete with BTs new Infinity network.

The BT Network which showcases FTTC, fibre to the cabinet technology is referenced at 40 MB download capability. Both of these systems ask the question of whether or not UK consumers need and desire the super fast internet without a phone line.

Recent broadband news has shown that the average speed by which UK consumers are able to connect is just around 4.7 MB. Bear in mind that this number does not reflect peak demand and usage. United Kingdom broadband consumers using an ADSL copper line connection can see ranges of over 4 MB in speed between the different times of day. The reason for this is that unlike the flow of electricity, flow of data over copper or even fiber optic lines is directly shared from a non infinite pool.

The infrastructure of older copper line connections and even new broadband without phone line capability is as yet unable to keep up with constantly evolving microprocessor improvement. What this means is that our computer’s are very often capable of handling the information contained in a download faster than the pipeline providing that information can send it. Fortunately both of the new United Kingdom fiber optic networks are being designed so as to eventually meet the demand.

Top Travel Adventure Destinations

June 15th, 2010

Niagara-FallsWhile many of us consider vacations as a time to relax, maybe enjoy some fine food and drinks and see some of the places that we had only previously read about, others look for a little more when planning a trip. Some of us want to get out and enjoy the outdoors or maybe the wilderness and spice up our vacation with a little bit of adventure that you can’t find in your own backyard. Realizing this, we thought we’d take a look at some of the top travel destinations for those that are looking for excitement on their next (adventure) vacation!

Maui
Home of some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere on the planet, trips to Maui for adventure seekers often revolve around some of the gorgeous terrain that make up the mountainous regions of the island. Hiking through some of the primeval jungles of Maui can be awe-inspiring and can be the highlight of any trip to Hawaii. Outside of that, adventure-seekers will also be interested in the surfing that a Hawaii vacation has to offer that brings in people from all over the world.

Channel Islands
Located just off the coast of California, a trip to Santa Barbara or Los Angeles trip is not complete until you get to visit Channel Islands. This chain of five islands is perfect for anyone looking for a paddling adventure and can be highlighted by sea caves, which dot the shore. Take an expert with you if you can and be sure to bring plenty of water and let someone know where you are when you’re paddling around these magnificent islands.

Niagara Falls

This might a little outdated, but Niagara tours used to include a barrel and a whole lot of water. Now however, Niagara Falls tours are more likely to include a trip to this beautiful locale where you can see these raging waters up close and take in stories of adventures of the past.

The Galapagos Islands
The nice thing about a trip to The Galapagos Islands is that not only is this a great place to enjoy an adventurous vacation, but it can also be romantic. Try snorkeling off the coast and enjoy the wildlife and aquatic life that resides just under the crisp ocean layer on a honeymoon or just go with some friends and enjoy the trip.

The Grand Canyon
Not that this needs much explanation, but trips to the Grand Canyon often include a helicopter ride over this giant chasm that’s 18 miles wide, 277 miles long and 6,000 feet deep. After your helicopter ride, check out various places that’ll allow other adventure, such as hiking or mule rides down into the canyon.

Alaska
Likely our coldest mention, Alaska vacations often include cruises. However, our more adventurous travelers might be willing to hop in a small vessel to do a little exploring of their own. While this might not be much of an adventure, it sure brings you up close to parts of the world you probably haven’t seen before and hopping in a small boat on an Alaska tour might be one of the more adventurous things you’ll end up doing.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Now Available

June 10th, 2010

download-and-try-out-the-new-adobe-photoshop-lightroom-3-beta-for-freeAdobe Systems Incorporated has announced the immediate availability of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 software for Windows and Macintosh, the essential digital photography workflow solution that allows photographers to quickly organize, enhance and showcase their images from one application. First released as a public beta in October 2009, the final version of Lightroom 3 introduces a completely redesigned performance architecture that better handles growing image libraries and provides an unrivaled raw processing engine with noise reduction and sharpening tools to achieve the highest image quality. The 64-bit capable Lightroom 3 includes new features that optimize workflows and allow images to be shared in creative ways, including support for DSLR video files and tethered shooting on select cameras.

“There have been over 600,000 downloads of the Lightroom 3 public beta, which has supplied us with a huge amount of valuable feedback from a passionate community of professional and advanced amateur photographers,” said Kevin Connor, vice president of product management for Digital Imaging at Adobe. “The open dialog we have with our customers allows us to further improve Lightroom and provide the best tools they need to produce high-quality images. We’re happy to see that so many people are anxiously anticipating the final release, so they can start taking advantage of all the new features they had a hand in developing.”

Public Beta Process Perfect Lightroom 3 New Features

Re-built from its core to be lightening fast and responsive, Lightroom 3 adds power throughout the application to provide a fluid experience for photographers. Images load almost instantaneously, and the import experience has been redesigned to be more intuitive, with added previews and default selections that give users quick access to sort through and find images. Helping streamline and adapt to photographers’ changing workflows, Lightroom 3 now allows users to import and manage DSLR video files, as well as take advantage of tethered shooting for select Nikon and Canon cameras.

New state-of-the-art photographic tools help. Unrivaled Luminance and Color Noise Reduction tools help produce a clearer picture from high ISO or underexposed images while still preserving details. The highly-requested Automatic Lens Correction feature can dramatically improve the results possible with any lens by allowing users to apply profiles that correct for undesirable geometric distortions, chromatic aberrations, and lens vignette effects that most lenses introduce to the image. Users now also have a straighten tool to perfect vertical and horizontal perspective, additional presets for applying more photographic adjustment styles, and three new contemporary vignette styles and a Grain effect to add a more natural look with images.

Lightroom 3 Expands Image Showcasing

Output options have also been enhanced in this release, with new capabilities to publish collections on online sharing sites. Flickr® users have the ability to synch their accounts to Lightroom with one click, and integration with additional online photo sharing sites can be added via third-party plug-ins. Customizable print layouts provide more refined control over how photographers present final images, and new watermarking features with options to modify text, size, location and style, help give professionals and amateurs flexibility for branding images. Lightroom 3 now also includes the ability to export polished slideshows as video files with the option to add audio and title screens.

Dell Wasabi Portable Photo Printer

June 9th, 2010

dell_wasabi-pz310-1-thumb-450x360Dell is known for all things related to PCs, like monitors and other computer peripherals. But printers? Departing from its usual offerings, the company has decided to dabble in the photo printing realm and treated us to a gob of its new Wasabi portable photo printer.

Hot Stuff

Given that the Dell Wasabi is touted as a portable photo printer, we expected it to be adequately light and easy on the hands. With its battery included, the Wasabi weighs in at a handy 225g and is only slightly larger than our palms. This puts it head to head with the Polaroid Pogo that’s just as portable.

The printer slot is located at one end of the device, churning out the printed images on its adhesive-backed Zero Ink (ZINK) paper, which is slightly smaller than a typical name card. On the opposing end from the printer slot, there’s the Power button, which works in tandem with the battery indicators just on top. In line with its funky image, the battery life is indicated either by a smiling or a sad face icon, representing a normal or low charge of its battery respectively.

Right beside the Power button is the One-Touch Reprint function. Like it says, this will reprint the last image that was sent to the Wasabi. Lastly, to open up the hinged plastic cover at the top for you to refill the Zero Ink paper, there’s an unlocking mechanism to the right of the One-Touch Reprint button.

Ink Stains Begone!

The Wasabi’s unique feature lies in its lack of ink cartridges. You only need the ZINK paper, which has Dell’s trademarked Amorphochromatic Crystals inside. By introducing a varying degree of heat to the crystals, specific colors will be produced on the ZINK paper. As such, it’s akin to a Polaroid camera, where you’ll be spending your moolah on the ZINK paper (and of course, the Wasabi printer too).

Being a portable device, the Wasabi supports two forms of input: PictBridge and Bluetooth. With PictBridge, it’s pretty straightforward: get a PictBridge compliant digital camera, connect it to the mini-USB port on the Wasabi, and just send the images to print. For Bluetooth, the idea is to use the mobile device’s Bluetooth feature, establish a connection to the Wasabi and send the image for printing.

The Wasabi’s printing speed is obviously not as swift as dedicated compact printers. We timed printing speeds (factoring in the data sending time too) ranging from 54 to 56 seconds using both PictBridge and Bluetooth connections.

Alternating between images taken from a Nokia N95 8GB’s camera and a Nikon COOLPIX S620, we noticed a significant amount of noise along with a greenish hue on the prints. A quick check with the original images showed that this only occurs on the Wasabi’s prints and not the source files. Theoretically, the Wasabi can print up to 15 prints on a single charge, but Dell sells the ZINK paper in a pack of 12 sheets, which also happens to be the maximum paper capacity within the Wasabi.

Parting Prints

The Wasabi performs adequately for those occasions when convenience matters more than print quality. For S$319, it is however kind of pricey compared to other dedicated compact printers that may boast more features. Still, if you are into funky gadgets, you can get the Wasabi in three colors, namely pink, blue or black.

MSI Wind U160, the Wind Blows Netbook

June 1st, 2010

Piczoom.aspMSI’s Wind U160 comes like a breath of fresh air with its new and spiffy looks. Gone are the slightly chunky builds of the previous models, instead, we’re graced with a netbook that looks pretty sassy and even reminiscent of something from Sony. But looks can only get you so far, so let’s see how this netbook really is.

A Metallic Shine

Where previous models of MSI’s netbooks had a plastic finish, the new Wind U160 goes for a metallic looking exterior that we can’t quite agree with. It looks pretty enough, but our fingers still tell us that we’re handling plastic. That’s right, despite a metallic finish, the notebook still uses plastic and feels like it. We can’t get behind this design change, as it feels tacky.

On the other hand, MSI has done much to cut down on the bulk, and you’ll find that this is a pretty slim netbook that we do admire. Now, we hope that this slimness doesn’t result too much in a shorter battery life, as the older thicker models had pretty lengthy battery uptime, but that was also due to having a much larger capacity (and subsequently thicker) battery. We’ll find out more lately, but hopefully the slimness doesn’t compromise what is MSI’s best feature for its netbooks.

An Island Interior

Besides going for slimness and a new exterior design, MSI has seen the interior undergo a similar renovation. Gone are the old style keyboards, instead, we find a new chiclet style keyboard that seems a little smaller in size. MSI also didn’t take the opportunity to get a bigger right shift key, so it’s not as ideal a keyboard as you may hope for. Moving downwards, the trackpad also remains similar, there isn’t a scroll bar at the side to swipe for scrolling, so it doesn’t feel as convenient as other trackpads.

Windy Performance

Now with the Wind U160 being a Intel Pineview netbook, we see the usual Intel Atom N450 processor as well as the standard 1GB RAM. With our usual benchmarks, the unit scored 1329 PCMarks on our PCMark Vantage test, which is pretty much the usual average score we get from netbooks. As usual, there are no magical surprises; you’ll be getting a netbook that’s pretty similar to all others in performance.

As for the battery life, the Wind U160 didn’t disappoint, lasting a cool 6 hours and 49 minutes on our video looping test, which is set at 50% brightness and volume. Very impressive, given its slim build, and shows just how far netbooks have come. Overall, the MSI Wind U160 is a netbook that we wouldn’t mind recommending to anyone, if they can look past the slightly tacky feel to its solid performing heart.
